Falken Tire - Belt broke(?) and tire shredded
I was traveling out-of-state and became aware of a vibration and rumbling sound. At first I thought it might be road noise, but when I got on the interstate highway, it got worse.
I pulled over to check for cupping or anything that looked abnormal. Not seeing anything we continued driving. About 10 minutes later, my left rear tire pretty much exploded, causing over $2,200 damage to my RAV-4 as the steel belts flung around and damaged the rear door, the rear panel, the bumper and various parts beneath the car. My insurance covered the repairs (minus my 250 deductible), but referred my case to their investigators that look into product performance and negligence.
If they find similar experiences, they said they would seek to recover their costs from Falken. I did not contact Falken myself. My tires had 43,000 miles on them and I had purchased them 4 years ago.
Until this issue, I had been quite satisfied with their braking, handling, and quietness. I'm getting new tires today -- and they aren't Falken.
